July 28-29, 2007. I took the time to snap a number of pictures while out on the field; the best of them can be seen here. The pictures aren’t in chronological order, rather organized by the section of the field. Video was also taken, which will be available as soon as I'm able to edit and upload it.
This year most of the action in the Michigan Monster Game occurred around the Castle, Mitchell crossing (aka Heartbreak Hill), and the meatgrinder. There was a little bit of action in the backwater woods bases, but we didn't go back there. A few short fights ensued in the Village, however I wasn't there to take pictures (although we did take some video of one such battle).
These pictures and videos show viewpoints from the Yellow team. Featured are many people from shockerowners.com and pbnation.com (and other sites), including Russ "Blizzard", Marcos "crzmx", Dennis "DTM", Scott "dunglizard", Styg, Ydna, Elixir, and others. Video was taken by DTM and Blizzard.
Some tanks used during the game. Tanks can't be eliminated so they provide a means to push forward during attacking situations.
East of the Castle, defending it from red attackers to the West.
The attacking red players are pushed back and we're able to enter the Castle, to defend it from within.
Eventually the action is pushed away from the Castle so we exit and proceed to the West perimeter (this is the Heartbreak Hill area seen below).
The action is pushed all the way across the Hill and onto the bridges below it (not seen).
After the sides were switched, we're now attacking the Hill area from the Southwest. The first picture is from the Pentagon, which is the Westward insertion point, facing the brdges in front of the Hill.
We make a push up and over the bridges, then proceed up the Hill itself.
Attacking the area West of the Castle...
Eventually we're able to make our way up and assault the Castle directly. The red defenders have to be cleared out first, but even after teh Castle is emptied you have to have a hold of the land adjacent to it, or you won't be able to get inside.
Elsewhere, the thin span of grass and spools inside of the netting is commonly referred to as the Meatgrinder. This is a constant-action portion of the field that links the Castle with the woods to the East. Here's some action from the East viewpoint:
And some more action from the West (this was late on sunday, after the field had become covered in paint)...
Self-portrait after being shot...
DTM filming some of the action...
Video:
The video viewpoint is again from the Yellow team. Videos were filmed on Saturday then later on Sunday. The cameramen are known to follow around our specific group of people, so a good portion of the footage is centered around that. The following map shows the approximate route the cameraman followed while filming the videos.
Part 1: Mitchell hill | Low-res (4-MB)
High-res (29-MB) |
We insert onto the field and head over to Mitchell crossing. The action is located on top of the hill, toward the Castle. The team isn't moving so we throw some smoke, although it didn't do much good. |
Part 2: Castle | Low-res (4-MB)
High-res (33-MB) |
Players reinsert back onto the field. The team has fought their way up to the Castle and are attacking it directly. The Castle itself doesn't have any enemy players inside, but nobody can get inside since the doorway is covered by red shooting lanes (meaning we have to totally surround the Castle in order to make any advancement). |
Part 3: Village assault | Low-res (4-MB)
High-res (45-MB) |
Yellow takes the Castle and continues moving through the woods toward the Village. Players begin to surround the South side but are delayed by the Red tank that pulls up the road. Once the tank leaves, Yellow players are able to pour into the buildings and destroy anything that moves. |
Extended battle scene (on youtube) |
This is the full battle leading up through that Village assault. It picks up after we take the Castle (the above video) and continues all the way through the Village stomp. There are brief cuts in the clips but the majority of the action is uncut and uncensored. | |
Part 4: Castle defense | Low-res (4-MB)
High-res (32-MB) |
Yellow players are already hard at work defending the Castle from the West. After a quick tour we join the action, attacking the mitchell hill zone and the swamp under it. I threw some smoke at 1:30 but the cameraman didn't film it. |
Part 5: Mitchell hill | Low-res (4-MB)
High-res (33-MB) |
This is the same location and direction as the first video. The team throws a few smoke grenades then uses them to push up toward the Castle. |
